George H. W. Bush 41st President 1989-1993

Accomplishments and Challenges:

Constitutional:
1. George's father Prescott Bush was elected Senator of Connecticut in 1952. That influenced George in politics. Therefore the 41st president served two terms as a representative to congress from Texas. Unsuccessfully he ran for senate twice.
2. He was chosen for a series of high level positions. He was the Ambassador to the United nations, chairman of the Republican National committee, chief of the U.S. Liaison office in the people's Republic of China, and lastly George was the Director of the Central Intelligence Agency.
3. Bush campaigned for president, he did not win in 1980. However he was elected Vice President for Ronald Reagan. In 1988 he finally won the election for president, he defeated the Governor of MAssachusetts Michael Dukakis in the general elections.

Quote: "Our nation is the enduring dream of every immigrant who ever set foot on these shores, and the millions still struggling to be free. This nation, this idea called America, was and always will be a new world -- our new world".

Quote: "We are a nation of communities... a brilliant diversity spread like stars, like a thousand points of light in a broad and peaceful sky" (http://www.brainyquote.com/quotes/authors/g/george_h_w_bush.html).

Dependent:
1. To ensure better harmony between the executive and congressional branches.
o Quote: “We need a new engagement, too, between the Executive and the Congress. The challenges before us will be thrashed out with the House and the Senate. And we must bring the Federal budget into balance. And we must ensure that America stands before the world united, strong, at peace, and fiscally sound. But of course things may be difficult. We need to compromise; we've had dissension. We need harmony; we've had a chorus of discordant voices” (http://www.presidency.ucsb.edu/ws/index.php?pid=16610&st=&st1=).
§ Also from his inaugural address, this quote talks about the promised efforts to better work things out to aid the American public within the executive and congressional branches. Examples of things they needed to work together on were the budget and finding ‘harmony’. However, this promise is a ‘dependant’ one especially because it is directly related to the president and the other powers of congress that would be needed to establish change in policy or workings of those branches.

Quote: "We know what works: Freedom works. We know what's right: Freedom is right. We know how to secure a more just and prosperous life for man on Earth: through free markets, free speech, free elections, and the exercise of free will unhampered by the state."

-George H. W. Bush

Looney:

1. To quit relying on public moneys to end the problems of poverty.

o Quote: “The old solution, the old way, was to think that public money alone could end these problems. But we have learned that that is not so. And in any case, our funds are low. We have a deficit to bring down. We have more will than wallet, but will is what we need. We will make the hard choices, looking at what we have and perhaps allocating it differently, making our decisions based on honest need and prudent safety. And then we will do the wisest thing of all. We will turn to the only resource we have that in times of need always grows: the goodness and the courage of the American people” (http://www.presidency.ucsb.edu/ws/index.php?pid=16610&st=&st1=).
§ This quote is from the president’s inaugural address and though the hope that it calls from the American public is something that perhaps the American public should have, the promise being made is borderline ‘loony’ because the president, though he has the power to offer and suggest the way in which public money is spent, does not have power over the ‘goodness and the courage of the American people’. It is a promise that is perhaps trying to inspire change in the American public, but at the time of his inauguration, the president probably was unaware of what an economic downturn that was in the works.
